Referral
You do not need a referral to see a Clinical Psychologist.
Medicare Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative
However, if you want to obtain a Medicare Health Rebate then a referral is required under the Better Access to Mental Health
Scheme. A Medicare Rebate is available if your GP, Psychiatrist or Paediatrician refers you and completes a Mental Health Care Plan
(item numbers 2700, 2701, 2715 or 2717). Your GP will require you to book a longer consulation time to conduct the Mental Health
Care Plan assessment.
Under the Better Access to Mental Health Scheme you are entitled to a maximum of 10 individual sessions per calendar year, with a
review by the referring doctor required after the initial six sessions. In addition, you are also eligible for 10 group therapy session
services, where appropriate, in a calendar year. Please review the Better Access to Mental Health Information Sheet.
There are a range of mental health difficulties which may enable you to be eligible to access the Mental Health Care Plan Initiative.
These may include but are not restricted to feelings of depression, anxiety, panic, phobia, loss and grief, trauma, stress, post
traumatic stress disorder, adjustment disorder, alcohol use, drug use, sleep difficulties and attention deficit disorder.
